North Carolina Woman 'In Total Shock' After 'Epic' Lottery Win

A North Carolina woman was in "shock" after scoring a major lottery prize after hitting the jackpot in a digital game.

Cynthia Karcher, of Raleigh, was playing the Wheel of Bonuses digital instant game on May 4 when she won the top "Epic" level jackpot, winning the progressive prize of $461,435, according to a release from the NC Education Lottery. The lottery website notes that the odds of winning the prize are 1 in 62 million.

"I was in total shock," she said. "I always had hope, but I never hoped for something like that."

Karcher admitted that the prize came at a great time as she is retired, telling lottery officials, "This is just a lovely amount at this time in my life."

Karcher claimed her prize at lottery headquarters on Friday (May 9), taking home a total of $331,080 after all required state and federal tax withholdings. According to lottery officials, she plans to use her new winnings do some remodeling around her house while also putting some in savings; however, she also envisions herself traveling overseas.

"I would like to take a trip to Greenland, Australia, and New Zealand," she said.

Following Karcher's win, the jackpot reset to $50,000. As of Monday (May 12), it was over $177,000.
