A large selection of ready-to-eat food has been recalled from a handful of states over a potential for making consumers sick.
Fresh & Ready Foods issued a voluntary recall for dozens of ready-to-eat sandwiches and snacks "due to a possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes," according to a recall notice shared May 11 by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. Check out the FDA's website for a full list of affected products.
The products were distributed to "vending machines and breakroom areas within corporate offices, medical buildings and healthcare facilities" in four states — including Washington — between April 18 and April 28 and feature a "Use By" date between 04/22/2025 and 05/19/2025.
Listeria monocytogenes is the bacteria that can cause listeria, leading to "serious and sometimes fatal infections" that can cause severe illness in high-risk groups like children, the elderly, those who are pregnant and persons with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches, nausea and diarrhea.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been at least 10 hospitalizations in connection to the Listeria outbreak linked to the read-to-eat foods. Consumers are urged to check products' "Use By" date on the front of each package and to immediately throw out any that are included in the recall.
