Lorde recently unveiled her upcoming fourth album, Virgin, explaining how personal the project is for her. "I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A DOCUMENT THAT REFLECTED MY FEMININITY: RAW, PRIMAL, INNOCENT, ELEGANT, OPENHEARTED, SPIRITUAL, MASC," she wrote in an email to fans. And now, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, the singer opened up even more about her "expansive" gender identity.

The topic came up when Lorde spoke about the period between the release of Solar Power in 2021 and making Virgin throughout 2023 and 2024. The turbulent time in her life included a significant breakup, receiving psychedelic therapy, and coming to terms with an eating disorder. With all the self-reflection, she was also able to re-examine her own gender identity. “My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room,” the 28-year-old said.

She then revealed that a lyric in the album's opening track says “Some days I’m a woman/Some days I’m a man." That prompted the question on if Lorde is nonbinary, to which she recalled a recent conversation with her friend Chappell Roan. “She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’ And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man,’" Lorde explained. "I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.”

Virgin is slated for a June 27 release. In September, Lorde plans to hit the road on a world tour. See a full list of dates here.
