At least 1.7 million eggs have been recalled as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections. The recall, announced on Friday (June 6), involves eggs distributed by August Egg Company and sold under the following brands: Clover, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics, Marketside, Raleys, Simple Truth, Sun Harvest, and Sunnyside. Consumers are advised to check their egg cartons and discard or return any recalled products to the store.
"The recalled eggs have a printed Julian Date between '32' and '126' followed by a plant code number 'P-6562' or 'CA-5330' on the egg carton or package."
The outbreak has prompted health officials in several states to collaborate with the CDC and FDA to trace the source of the contamination. The FDA's official statement urges consumers to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent infection. Salmonella bacteria are a leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States, causing symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and lead to serious health complications.
As the investigation continues, consumers are reminded to practice food safety measures, such as cooking eggs thoroughly and washing hands, surfaces, and utensils after handling raw eggs. The CDC and FDA will provide updates as more information becomes available.
