Eric Dane shared a "sobering" health update in his first sit down interview following his ALS diagnosis.
In an interview with Good Morning America that aired Monday (June 16), the 52-year-old Grey's Anatomy actor revealed that he is losing function in his body amid his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, two months after first announcing his health battle, per E! News.
"I have one functioning arm... My left side, is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working," he said. "I feel like maybe a couple more months, and I won't have my left hand either. It's sobering."
According to the ALS Association, ALS is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and causes individuals to gradually lose muscle control, including "the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe."
Dane, who shared that he's "worried" he will soon lose function in his legs, explained some of the first signs he noticed that something could be wrong.
"I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand," he said. "I didn't really think anything of it at the time. I thought maybe I'd been texting too much or my hand was fatigued, but a few weeks later I noticed it got a little worse."
After months of seeing multiple hand specialists and neurologists, he was diagnosed with ALS, a reality that is always on his mind.
"I will never forget those three letters," he said. "It's on me the second I wake up. It's not a dream."
Dane revealed in April that he had been diagnosed with the rare, incurable disease, saying at the time, "I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter." Dane has been married to wife Rebecca Gayheart since 2004, though they separated in 2018. As of March 2025, however, they have reportedly reconciled. They share two children, Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13.
