A life-threatening heat dome has prompted alerts for 147 million Americans across 28 states, as record-high temperatures challenge previous benchmarks. The first major heat wave of the summer is impacting the eastern half of the United States, with cities along the Interstate 95 corridor, including Washington, Philadelphia, and New York City, experiencing temperatures near 100 degrees. Humidity levels are also soaring, with dew points rising into the 70s, making conditions feel even hotter.

The heat dome will have more than 190 million Americans experiencing temperatures above 90 degrees. In the Midwest, cities like Minneapolis have already set new records, with temperatures reaching 96 degrees, breaking records from 1900 and 1910. The extreme heat has even caused infrastructure issues, such as roads buckling in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

The National Weather Service has issued Extreme Heat Warnings, the most severe heat alerts, stretching from Richmond, Virginia, up through the Northeast, including cities like New York City, New Haven, and Boston. These warnings will be in effect for the next few days, urging residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

As the heat wave continues, officials warn that more infrastructure issues could arise, and people are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the heat. The situation underscores the importance of preparedness in the face of extreme weather conditions.
