A man in North Carolina was shocked to discover he won a huge lottery prize after following a piece of helpful advice from his brother.
Patrick Kelly, of Hickory, recently picked up a $20 scratch-off ticket for the 100X The Cash game from the Raceway on U.S. 231 because his brother "recommended I buy that one," according to a release from the NC Education Lottery. It was a good thing he listened too, because he ended up winning a $100,000 prize.
"I was dumbfounded," he said. The Catawba County man told lottery officials that he made sure to share the news with his brother. "We hugged it out. It was a good feeling."
Kelly claimed his prize at lottery headquarters on Monday (June 23), taking home an impressive $71,756 after all required state and federal tax withholdings. He already has plans for what to do with his new winnings, including paying off his student loans and investing more funds for the future.
According to the lottery website, the 100X The Cash game launched in January with four top prizes of $2 million and six $100,000 prizes. Following Kelly's win, three $2 million prizes and two prizes of $100,000 remain to be claimed.
