A mass overdose event in Baltimore's Penn-North neighborhood on Thursday (July 10) led to 25 people being hospitalized. Conditions range from serious to non-life-threatening, according to a spokesperson for Baltimore City Fire. The incident began around 9:25 a.m. when emergency crews responded to reports of overdose symptoms affecting as many as 15 people at Pennsylvania and North avenues.

Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace noted that five individuals are in critical condition, and the number of affected individuals may increase as more cases are identified. Paramedics on the scene quickly scaled up their response upon realizing the extent of the emergency. Authorities have not yet determined the substance involved in the overdoses.

The incident has prompted a significant response from local officials. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott stated on social media that first responders and community partners are distributing resources, including test strips and Narcan, to those in need. Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller have expressed their readiness to mobilize state resources to support the city's efforts.

Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan Bates emphasized the ongoing battle against the opioid epidemic and commended the first responders for their swift action.
