Parts of Fort Stewart in Georgia are currently on lockdown following reports of an active shooter situation just before 11 a.m. ET on Wednesday (August 6). According to Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for the Fort Stewart Police Department, the installation was locked down at 11:04 a.m.
The shooting happened in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of the base. The shooter was apprehended at 11:35 a.m. The area remains on lockdown, while the lockdown has been lifted in other areas of the fort.
Officials said that five soldiers were shot and taken to Winn Army Community Hospital. No information was provided about their condition.
Fort Stewart, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is a key training and deployment site for active and reserve Army units, including the 3rd Infantry Division. The base is home to over 10,000 soldiers, family members, and Army civilian employees. In response to the incident, agents from the FBI's Savannah office are coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division.
Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers." The lockdown has also affected nearby schools, with several placed on soft lockdown as a precautionary measure.
