Wiz Khalifa is facing prison time in Romania over a marijuana charge he received last year.
According to a report TMZ published on Thursday, December 18, the Constanța Court of Appeals upheld an appeal filed by Romania's prosecutor's office, DIICOT Constanța Territorial Service, to sentence the rapper to nine months in prison. Wiz, born Cameron Thomaz, was indicted on an illicit drug charge last October after he lit up a joint on stage at the "Beach, Please!" festival in Costinești last July. Following his arrest, the Pittsburgh native only received a citation for a fine of 3,000 lei, which is equal to $700 USD.
Fans might remember the footage that went viral last July. It showed the Kush & Orange Juice rapper being arrested after he smoked a joint while he was on stage dancing to Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's "The Next Episode." He was later released, but authorities continued to investigate the situation. Recreational use and possession of marijuana are illegal in Romania and carry heavy consequences, including prison time.
“Last night's show was amazing. I didn’t mean to disrespect Romania by lighting up a joint on stage," he wrote on X after he was arrested. "They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big joint next time."
Wiz Khalifa has not commented on the latest update in his case. TMZ notes that the decision isn't final. The rapper's legal team is appealing the sentence.
