From an extremely poor environment, the Recife borough Alto José do Pinho, the Devotos first appeared as Devotos do Ódio. Building their own instruments from scrap metal, the group played in small community venues. Their sound is described by them as "punk rock hardcore." In September 1993 the group won the first place in the Recife Rock Show. In the next year, they participated in the second edition of the Festival Abril Pro Rock and in its all subsequent editions.
