b. 21 September 1936, Crum, West Virginia, USA. A banjo player, Varney worked and recorded with artists such as Hylo Brown, Jim Horn, Ralph Stanley and Landon Messer And The Riverside Grass. He also played in and often led or was featured with several popular bands, including the Rocky Mountain Boys, the Rocky Mountain Pals and the West Virginia Boys.
