Singer David Slutes of the Sand Rubies formed the Tucson-based guitar-pop band Maryanne with guitarist Robin Johnson upon the apparent demise of his previous group. The two recruited area musicians Kelly Burd (bass), drummer Derrick David (soon replaced by Winston Watson), and (for a short while) guitarist Larry Vance. Initially called Ginger, the band changed its name to Maryanne in 1996 and began recording the material that became its debut album, Your First, Your Last, Your Everything, which was issued nationally in 1999.
