Quincy Yeates and Matt Hall first joined forces to form Saint Somewhere in 1997 while both men were students at the University of Tennessee. The Caribbean-born Yeates sang and played the steel drums and piano, while Hall played guitar and wrote songs in a Jimmy Buffett vein. Realizing their duo needed something more, they brought Tod Sheley into the group to play congas. Sheley lasted until early 1999, and over the years a few other musicians also came and went.
