New Music Report - Week of June 5th

By Nicole Mastrogiannis, James Dinh & Isha Thorpe

June 5, 2017

Happy Monday! Kickstart your week ahead by checking out all of the new music that has just been released in this roundup of new songs, new albums, and new artists that you need to be listening to.

From new albums by Halsey and All Time Low, to new songs from Ne-Yo and Foo Fighters, to new collaborations from Fifth Harmony & Gucci Mane and Major Lazer, Camila Cabello, Travis Scott & Quavo, to our expert picks, take a look at this week's New Music Report.

NEW RELEASES

Fifth Harmony featuring Gucci Mane - "Down"

Fifth Harmony released their first single since becoming a group of four ... and it. is. a. BOP. The new song "Down" features Gucci Mane, and is the lead single from the girls' upcoming third studio album. The track was written by Jude Demorest, Gucci Mane, and Ammo and DallasK, who also produced the song.

On "Down," the girls sing about loving their significant other to no end with lyrics like, "There ain't no kind of situation/Where I wouldn't cross a line for you" and "FBI interrogation/I would get up there and lie for you." And on Gucci Mane's verse, the rapper goes pop culture in his bars, referencing Bonnie and Clyde and Michael Jordan, also quickly alluding to the time he spent in jail. "And I'll never tell a soul what you told me/When I was sittin' in the cells is when you showed me/It takes a real one to put up with the old me."

DJ Khaled featuring Drake - "To The Max"

Believe it, folks. After the incessant badgering for Drake vocals via Snapchat, DJ Khaled finally received the bars and worked them into “To The Max,” his new single from his upcoming album, Grateful. Atop some frenetic production, which includes a distorted beat and cut-up female vocals, Drizzy spits rhymes about the height of his fame. "Got it on the dresser, I've been under pressure/ They wanna see me laid out on a stretcher/ Gotta keep my head up,” he raps during the second verse. Grateful arrives June 23.

Halsey - hopeless fountain kingdom

Similar to her debut album, BADLANDS, Halsey creates another concept driven idea for her sophomore effort, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. For this story, listeners follow a pair of lovers in the sort of limbo-like realm you’d only see in movie theaters. Hitting the studio with key pop producers like Greg Kurstin, Benny Blanco and Ricky Reed, the 22-year-old singer was able to whip up an effort that is easier to radio ears this time around.  "I am more than capable of writing radio music” she told Rolling Stone magazine of the project, adding, “Hopefully I'll put my money where my mouth is on this album.” The LP features Migos’ Quavo, Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui, and Cashmere Cat. See: “Now Or Never” and “Bad At Love"

Lorde - "Perfect Places"

Lorde has been pretty secretive about her new upcoming sophomore album, and we're only a few weeks away. First, she released "Green Light," then she shared "Liability" when Melodrama was available for pre-order, but now, we finally have another song: "Perfect Places."

She explains to Genius.com that "Perfect Places" began to come together last summer while in New York City -- when it was REALLY hot out. In fact, there's a lyric in the song that says, "I hate the headlines and the weather." Lorde said of this line:

"This song started coming together late summer of 2016 in New York and the news was just horrific every day and it was so hot in this sickly incorrect kind of way, like what I imagine the weather in a disaster movie is like just before the bomb hits or the aliens land. It sort of drove me insane, I was walking around Midtown every day and felt like I was this close to ripping my clothes off or freaking out at a stranger. And every day in the news it’d be like 'Silver lining! Record high temperatures all weekend' and I’d think “DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS MEANS!!!!!!!! WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!” This is probably the most Melodrama line on the whole album."

Dua Lipa - Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa's self-titled debut album has FINALLY ARRIVED! The 21-year-old has become one of the most buzzworthy artists this year, with singles like "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)," "Be The One," and her collaboration with Miguel called "Lost In Your Light" -- which is her album's only feature. However, writing credits include artists like Coldplay's Chris Martin ("Homesick") and Emily Warren ("New Rules"), among others.

Back in April, Dua told iHeartRadio that putting her debut album together has brought forth some moments of self-discovery. "Everything about making the album's been so much fun. Definitely seeing it all come to life, seeing the different stages, the emotions that I went through, feeling like I was ready to release the album, and then having different opportunities and writing some more, and finding myself in different ways, and finding different things to write about."

Bleachers - Gone Now

Bleachers returns with Gone Now, the follow-up to his 2014 debut album, Strange Desire, and it’s quite telling of Jack Antonoff’s ability to combine alternative pop and emotional complexities so well. For this set, the musical impresario touches on a bunch of different topics, including anti-commercialism ("Don't Take The Money”) and the loss of his younger sister ("Everybody Lost Somebody”). If you had any doubt as to why he's earned the reputation for being a soul-baring pop paradigm for the titans of today like Taylor Swift and Lorde, it comes in the form of Gone Now. See: "Everybody Lost Somebody” and “All My Heroes"

All Time Low - Last Young Renegade

Last Young Renegade is All Time Low's seventh studio album and follows the band's 2015 album Future Hearts. Among its ten new songs, the album features several tracks the guys have already shared with fans including "Dirty Laundry," "Nice2KnoU," "Life of the Party," the title track "Last Young Renegade," and their latest single "Good Times."

All Time Low's Alex Gaskarth recently told iHeartRadio that making Last Young Renegade was a "new adventure" for the band. He explains that he went up to the mountains of Big Bear, California, as well as Palm Springs where the guys worked on a lot of the music. "One of the coolest things that came from that was, rather than just writing songs, we backed up and were looking at everything from the big picture," he tells us. "So we kinda came up with this concept for the album, and came up with all this connective tissue that gets you from song to song. That's something that I don't think we've ever really done as a band, so that was kind of a new approach for us, and it was very exciting to try that out."

Major Lazer - Know No Better EP

While fans are still waiting for Major Lazer's Music Is The Weapon album to drop, the trio hit us with an EP called Know No Better. The six-track set features collaborations with artists like Camila Cabello, Travis Scott & Quavo ("Know No Better"), and J Balvin and Sean Paul ("Buscando Huellas"), among others.

Know No Better is led by its title track, a catchy dance anthem featuring Travis Scott's signature vocals on the first and second verse, while Camila joins him on the pre-chorus and chorus. Then, Quavo comes in with his verse, "Drop top on the whip/Dab of ranch on the chips/Ice cream gave her chills."

*Summer Anthem Alert*

Foo Fighters - "Run"

Foo Fighters surprised fans last week when they dropped their new single "Run." The song is the first new piece of music from the band since they released their 2015 EP Saint Cecilia, and a classic instant foo rock anthem.  Along with the new song, Dave Grohl and crew also shared the accompanying music video for "Run," which was directed by Dave himself and sees the guys -- or what they would look like 50 years from now, anyway -- rocking out in an old age home. It's a must-watch.

Arcade Fire - "Everything Now"

Arcade Fire shared their brand new single, "Everything Now," from their forthcoming fifth studio album of the same name (which is available for pre-order now), and it's accompanying music video last week.

"Everything Now" is the title track from Arcade Fire's upcoming album, Everything Now, which is set to be released on July 28th. The song was produced by Arcade Fire, Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter and UK musician/producer Steve Mackey, with co-production from Grammy-winning producer Markus Dravs. The new song follows Arcade Fire's collaboration with Mavis Staples called "I Give You Power," which was their first new piece of music since the release of their 2013 album Reflektor

Meek Mill featuring Chris Brown & Ty Dolla $ign - "Whatever You Need"

More Meekend Music? Meek Mill dropped a new single called "Whatever You Need," and teamed up with Chris Brown and Ty Dolla $ign for the cut produced by DJ Mustard. The track throws it back to the '90s and samples Tony! Toni! Toné!’s 1991 song "Whatever You Want," and is expected to appear on Meek's Wins & Losses album. On "Whatever You Need," the guys sing and rap about giving their ladies ... well ... whatever they need, whether it's a new G Wagon, or a Chanel bag ... whatever their heart desires. "I'm givin' you whatever you want/Girl, you know I can provide," they sing in the chorus.

Krewella - "Love Outta Me"

Back in February, while promoting their single "Team," Krewella told iHeartRadio that they were "sitting on a bunch of new songs" (around five of them), and were figuring out when to release them. Since then, the girls released "Be There," and now they've given fans their latest single "Love Outta Me." Their new anthem is all about love and defeating any negativity that comes their way. "You can take me outta love/But you'll never take the love outta me," they sing.

And fans can expect more new music from the duo. Krewella announced the release date for their upcoming EP New World. In a statement, they said, "In honor of 6/08/10, the day we decided to quit our side hustle and drop out of school to dedicate ourselves to Krewella full-time, we are releasing an EP called New World on 6/08/17. Through the highs and lows of our career and personal lives, not a day has gone by that we haven’t regretted that decision to stay focused and committed to making music."

Julia Michaels - "Uh Huh"

After the slow-burning success of her debut single, “Issues,” Julia Michaels takes another step towards solo pop superstardom with her follow-up single, “Uh Huh,” and it’s even better than the debut. Over sexy guitar strings, the songwriter-turned-budding superstar sings about being in a relationship with a guy, who is just a tad too much to handle. Expect to hear this one on Julia’s upcoming EP, Nervous System.

Snakehips featuring ELHAE, D.R.A.M. & H.E.R. - "Right Now"

Following their hit "Don't Leave" featuring , Snakehips is back with another amazing new collaboration, this time with ELHAE, D.R.A.M. and H.E.R. The song is all about being present, and living in the now -- the "Right Now" to be exact. "And it ain't right, but it's right now," as they say in the song's chorus.

Terror Jr - "Appreciation"

Ahead of the release of Bop City 2: TerroRising, which is currently available for pre-order, Terror Jr drops another song off their forthcoming collection and it’s just as slinky as their previous earworms. It’s a sweet synth-covered cut, which hears the mysterious pop trio’s leading lady showing her gratitude to the person she loves even though she knows she’s a lot at time. “Appreciation” follows "Caramel” and “Death Wish.” Get ready to begin TerroRising on June 16.

Duke Dumont & Gorgon City featuring Naations - "Real Life"

Is this "Real Life"? It is for Duke Dumont and Gorgon City. The producers/DJs have all teamed up on a brand new collab "Real Life," which features vocals from Australian duo Naations. "Real Life" is a inescapable, infectious dance anthem as Naations sings, "I only wanna love you in real life."

Olly Murs featuring Luisa Johnson - "Unpredictable"

"The X Factor" worlds collide as Olly Murs recruits season 12 champ Louisa Johnson for "Unpredictable," the fourth single off his album, 24 Hours. Even though the album version of the cut didn’t feature the big-voiced singer, here we are seven months since the release of the LP with the poppy duet. On the three-minute cut, the pair sings about spontaneous love and just how great it is when someone isn’t in control of the dynamic.

Bea Miller - Chapter Two: Red

Bea Miller continues her trilogy (Chapters of Colors) with her second installment EP called Chapter Two: Red. It's an easily digestible set with just three tracks titled “Like That”, “Buy Me Diamonds”, and “Warmer.” The EP also hears the former "X Factor" alum covering all the grounds of  toxic relationships. Bad love ain't so good, folks. See: “Like That"

Aly & AJ - "Take Me"

For anyone who grew up in the 00s -- Alyson Michalka and Amanda Joy Michalka are BACK, although you might know them better as Aly & AJ ... and they have NEW MUSIC. The sisters have returned to the music world with a new single called "Take Me" (it's been TEN YEARS since they've released anything), and the new synth pop song will make your heart happy. The ladies are expected to drop an entire EP in July.

Danielle Bradbery - "Sway"

Danielle Bradbery is back with a brand new single! The country starlet's new song "Sway" is her first since her 2015 song "Friend Zone" and 2013 debut self-titled album. "Sway" is actually Danielle's first self-written single, co-written with Johan Fransson and Emily Weisband.

On Instagram, Danielle wrote of her new single, "How do you even caption a moment like this … It took US (y’all included) three years to get to this place. Three years of hard work & growth, new experiences & new people, trust in the process & faith in ourselves, and most of all a crazy amount of patience …. but we are finally here. “Sway,” the lead track off my next project coming later this year."

Ansel Elgort featuring Logic - "You Can Count On Me"

Know this, you can count on Ansel Elgort for some great new music. The producer/singer/actor released his new collaboration "You Can Count On Me" with rapper Logic. "You Can Count On Me" is a sweet pop ballad all about a girl Ansel is in love with. He sings, "'Cause when I'm around you, yeah/The world seems so much sweeter than it was."

"You Can Count On Me" Follows Ansel's previously released singles "Thief" and "Home Alone."

Luke Combs - This One's For You

After much anticipation from fans, Luke Combs released his debut full-length album This One's For You on June 2nd via Columbia Nashville. The album features 12 new songs including the title track "This One's For You," and songs like "Out There," "Memories Are Made Of," "Beer Can," "Hurricane," and "One Number Away."

Luke tells iHeartRadio exclusively of his album, "Releasing the first album has obviously been a lot of work up until this point. I started recording this thing over a year ago now, and so it's been quite a long journey getting to this point. But, I'm really ready for everybody to hear it."

Ice Cube - "Only One Me"

In case you bumped your head and forgot how much of the truth that Ice Cube is, here’s a not-so-gentle reminder. The hip hop vet released a new track entitled “Only One Me” and it goes hard. After signing to Interscope Records last week, Cube is releasing the belated Death Certificate: 25 Anniversary Edition, in honor of his 1991 classic of the same time. “Only One Me” will be one of three new songs on the project, along with “Dominate The Weak” and “Good Cop, Bad Cop.”

"I showed Tupac how to keep it gangsta/ I showed Biggie Smalls how to release his anger/ Who came before me?/ Melle Mel, Ice T, King Tee, KRS and the homey Chuck D," the rapper spits on the track. "P.E., D.O.C., n**ga know your history/ It's Cube in top three/ And you's a b**ch to me/ Ice Cube, the name will live in infamy/ There's a lot of yous, there's only one of me."

21 Savage - "All The Smoke"

21 Savage is back with another track “All The Smoke.” We haven’t heard from him, since the release of his Savage Mode album last year. But, it looks like he’s picking up where he left off with this one. Savage decided to drop a music video, along with the new song. “Dropped outta school, went and bought a tool / Got a deuce deuce, time to act a fool,” he raps on it. “All The Smoke” was produced by Southside. Matthew Swinsky directed the visual.

Yo Gotti & Mike WiLL Made-It - Gotti-Made It

Just a few short hours after announcing the project, Yo Gotti and super producer Mike Will Made-It released their joint album Gotti-Made It. There are a total of nine songs on it. Surprisingly, the album only has one feature and it’s the one and only Ms. Nicki Minaj. She’s on the song “Rake It up,” which is one of our expert picks that you can read about below. From the way that the album sounds in the first few minutes of listening, it’s definitely a banger.

Teyana Taylor featuring Migos -"Drippin"

The beautiful Teyana Taylor enlisted the help of rap group Migos for her new single “Drippin.” On the sexy song, Taylor expresses the urge to make love to her significant other, while love songs play in the background. “When was the last time we f**ked to a record?/ When was the last time we f**ked to a record?” she sings. The Migos rappers soon add their touches to the track with detailed accounts of pleasing their women, as well. The R-Rated “Drippin” video also leaves nothing to the imagination, as Taylor is covered in fluorescent paint, while she dances and sings.

Ne-Yo - "Another Love Song"

Surprise, surprise! Ne-Yo has been dropping new songs at least once a week, for the past few weeks now. Now, he’s released a song entitled “Another Love Song.” The previously released songs that he’s blessed us with were simply loose cuts. But, this new song is reportedly the lead single off of Ne-Yo’s upcoming album. Produced by Cirkut and Dr. Luke, “Another Love Song” tells how much in love Ne-Yo is and how much his partner means to him.

"You make me wanna sing another love song, loud enough for everybody to hear,” he sings. “You make me wanna sing another love song, and it started from the day you appeared.” “Another Love Song” really is a great, feel good track. We’re glad he’s not sick of them anymore…

2 Chainz & Travis Scott - "4 AM"

In anticipation of his upcoming album Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, 2 Chainz decided to drop his collaboration with Travis Scott called “4 AM.” Chainz was previously teasing the project for days before it was officially released. Now, it’s finally here for all Chainz and Scott lovers to enjoy. Pretty Girls Like Trap Music will be released on June 16. In the meantime, check out “4 AM” and get even more excited for the new project to come. Trust us, it’ll most definitely be worth the longer than anticipated wait.

Wiz Khalifa - Pre-Rolleds

Wiz Khalifa surprised all of his fans when he released an unexpected EP entitled Pre-Rolleds. Like we mentioned before, no one had any idea that something like this was even being worked on, let alone being dropped. Pre-Rolleds consists of four tracks, two of which fellow Taylor Gang member Chevy Woods is featured on. Pre-Rolleds comes before Khalifa’s Rolling Papers 2 album, which the rapper announced would be coming since last year. At the end of Pre-Rolleds, he admitted that we’ll have to wait a little bit longer for it. At least the MC thought enough about us to gift us this EP, while we wait. Good looking out.

EMERGING ARTIST OF THE WEEK: Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa has had an amazing year. We were hooked with "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)," continued to fangirl over her collaborations with Sean Paul ("No Lie") and Martin Garrix ("Scared To Be Lonely"), as well as her collaboration with Wale on his SHINE album called "My Love," which also features Major Lazer and WizKid.

Now, after much anticipation, Dua has FINALLY released her debut self-titled album, and we can't get enough. The album features 12 new songs, including singles like "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)," "Be The One," and her collaboration with Miguel called "Lost In Your Light" -- which is her album's only feature. Writing credits on the record also include artists like Coldplay's Chris Martin ("Homesick") and Emily Warren ("New Rules"), among others.

Dua's self-titled debut is a pop record, but fans will notice quite a few different genres throughout the album. "The album is very diverse. It is essentially a pop record, but it touches on lots of different genres. It's a lot of fun, and I've taken the time to experiment with all the things that I love," she explains to us. "I have grown up listening to so many different types of music, so it was really hard for me to really narrow it down to one thing. But, I think they'll [fans] be surprised, and I'm excited about it. And that's important."

EXPERT PICKS

Nicole's Picks:

RL Grime & Miguel - "Stay For It"

Miguel's voice is one of my favorites. So when RL Grime released this track, I knew I was going to love it. This song is epic. "Stay For It" definitely packs a punch, between the powerhouse production from RL Grime, and Miguel's sensual vocals and heartfelt lyrics -- the best of both worlds.

In fact, in a behind-the-scenes video, RL Grime says of the song, "It feels like a perfect marriage between both of our sounds." And Miguel added, of seeing the electronic musician's show once, "I've seen your shows. I remember standing there, and just being like, 'f***.' Because at every dynamic of everything, they were all the way in. All in. For the down moments, for the up moments, it was right there with you."

Bakermat featuring Kiesza - "Don't Want You Back"

This. Song. RULES. Dutch producer/DJ Bakermat has teamed up with Canadian vocalist Kiesza (the voice behind 2014's "Hideaway") for this absolutely infectious and catchy dance track all about breaking up with someone, and being completely done with them and moving on. Don't want you back, back, back, back/No point in begging on your knees/Nothing that I haven't seen before." Welcome to your new favorite breakup anthem.

James' Picks:

SZA - "Broken Clocks"

SZA is an unapologetic badass and her latest CTRL single, “Broken Clocks,” is the perfect example of that trait. Following the release of "Love Galore" "Travis Scott" and "Drew Barrymore,” the R&B darling is over and done with former flames on this new cut. "Been about three years since I dated you/ Why you still talking 'bout me like we together?," the TDE songstress croons during the second verse. "I moved on for the better/You moved on to whoever.” Ouch! We're less than a week from SZA's highly-anticipated LP, which drops on June 9.

Hey Violet - "O.D.D."

All seems to be shaping up well for Hey Violet’s second album, From the Outside, which comes out in less than two weeks. After their stellar lead single, “Guys My Age,” and the follow-up single, “Break My Heart,” the five-piece returns with a atmospheric slice of the pie called “O.D.D.” “Whenever we play this live, I give my spiel before the song. I say, 'We all feel different sometimes, we all feel a little out of places, a little messed up, and honestly it’s okay and it only makes you human,” Rena Lovelis said.

Isha's Picks:

Yo Gotti featuring Nicki Minaj - "Rake It Up"

Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj just released a banger called "Rake It Up" -- and it may be one of our new favorite songs. The track is perfect for turning up, whether you're partying at a strip club or a lit house party. What else would you expect from a Mike Will Made-It produced song? Of course, it's going to be a smash! Gotti spits: “I made love to a stripper (stripper), first I had to tip her (phrrr)...20 thousand ones, (woo) she said I’m that n**ga (I am)/I said I’m that n**ga, b**ch, I already know it (I know it)/I come with bad weather, (ksh) they say I’m a storm.”

Minaj soon comes through with her barz. “Brought out the pink Lamborghini just to race with Chyna/Brought the Wraith to China just to race in China/Lil’ bad Trini b**ch but she mixed with China/Real thick vagina, smuggle bricks to China.” Listen to the new hit below.

August Alsina - "Don't Matter"

After coming clean about his liver disease diagnosis earlier this week, August Alsina has released his latest love anthem entitled "Don't Matter." Though this news was tough to hear from his doctors, Alsina is holding his head up high and remaining optimistic. He's all about spreading love and positive vibes now. That brings us to his new single "Don't Matter." He's singing about giving his all and loving a significant lover unconditionally. Listen to "Don't Matter" below. It's beautiful.
