Colin Kaepernick: I Spoke To Meek Mill In Jail, Here's His Message To Fans

By Isha Thorpe

November 20, 2017

Two weeks ago, Meek Mill was sentenced back to prison for two to four years for violating his probation. Since then, fans and fellow celebs have been protesting his incarceration.

From T.I., DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, JAY-Z, Drake and more; people believe that Meek doesn't need to be in prison again because he's been on the straight and narrow; and his growth has also been shown by the tons of philanthropic work that Meek's been doing over the past few months.

One person who's known for standing up -- or kneeling down -- for change in society is former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. On Monday (Nov. 20), the athlete revealed that he had a conversation with Meek about his sentencing. "Spoke to Meek Mill & he wanted ppl to know regardless of his unjust situation, he’s in good spirits & humbled by the support the people have shown him," Kap tweeted. "We'll continue to fight against the harsh sentencing practices that have affected Meek & millions of other POC for generations."

Check out the ball player's message about Meek below.

This tweet comes just days after Kap posted a note about Meek's prison sentence on IG. In this post, Kap said: "Meek Mill is a victim of this systemic oppression.Yes, there needs to be action surrounding sentencing reform, but there needs to also be action taken around abolishing the radicalized norms of injustice that can lead to Meek Mill serving 2-4 years in prison for non-violent parole violations, and Brock Turner only serving 3 months in prison for three felony counts of sexual assault."

Roughly 2.2 million people are incarcerated in the United States, an increase of 1.9 million since 1972. America professes to be the land of the free, yet it has the world’s largest prison population – with one-quarter of the globes prisoners, and just 5% of the total population. Disproportionately America’s prisons are filled with Black bodies. This criminal (in)justice system, ripe with racial discrimination, stigmatizes, profiles, and targets young Black men for arrest at a young age, having its roots in their hyper-policed neighborhoods that they are raised in, and sadly extending into what should be a safe space—the classroom, via the school to prison pipeline. Meek Mill is a victim of this systemic oppression. Yes, there needs to be action surrounding sentencing reform, but there needs to also be action taken around abolishing the racialized norms of injustice that can lead to Meek Mill serving 2-4 years in prison for non-violent parole violations, and Brock Turner only serving 3 months in prison for three felony counts of sexual assault. 📸: @karlfergusonjr
