Beyonce's Mom Reveals Why Singer's Mega Coachella Performance Worried Her

Beyoncé's history-making Coachella performance was all HBCU-inspired, from the beginning to the very end. One person who was a bit worried about the set was Bey's mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, and she expressed that on social media.

Knowles-Lawson discussed this when she posted a photo of an article that was written about Bey's performance. She explained that she told her superstar daughter that the Coachella audience might not understand her message. "I told Beyonce that I was afraid that the predominately white audience at Coachella would be confused by all of the black culture and Black college culture because it was something that they might not get," Knowles-Lawson said. "Her brave response to me made me feel a bit selfish and ashamed."

Then, the mom further explained why Bey felt so strongly about her college-inspired set. "She said I have worked very hard to get to the point where i have a true voice and at this point in my life and my career, I have a responsibility to do what's best for the world and not what is most popular."

Knowles-Lawson closed her message: "She said that her hope is that after the show young people would research this culture and see how cool it is, and young people black and white would listen to LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING and see how amazing the words are for us all and bridge the gap. She also hopes that it will encourage young kids to enroll in our amazing Historically Black Colleges and Universities . I stand corrected ❤️."

Since Bey's performance, the star announced that she'll be donating $100,000 in scholarship money to four HBCUs. One student each from Xavier University of Louisiana, Wilberforce University, Tuskegee University and Bethune-Cookman University will be awarded $25,000 to pay for their tuition and other colleges expenses.
