Ask and you shall receive. Crazy Rich Asians is moving forward with a sequel at Warner Bros after a massively successful opening weekend. With the $35.3 million five-day opening under their belt, the creative team behind the film is ready to hit the ground running on the sequel. Jon M. Chu, who directed the groundbreaking film, is planning to return for the followup, as well as producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson and screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim. With the same creative minds back for the next installment of the franchise, the sophomore film is sure to be just as great as the first.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. hasn't officially green-lighted the sequel, however, the film is still pretty much a sure thing. They're moving forward with "development" on the sequel, which is a pretty standard practice. Major movie studios like to take a "wait-and-see approach" with potential franchises. The success during Crazy Rich Asians opening weekend, as well as the fact that their moving forward with development, means fans of Kevin Kwan's novels will see China Rich Girlfriend adapted for the big screen.
Rom-coms have been taking a page out of Marvel's playbook recently by including mid-credits scenes that tease potential sequels. Netflix's adaptation of the young adult novel To All The Boys I've Loved Before, which came out on the same day as Crazy Rich Asians, included a quick scene that introduced a dreamy new love interest for the main character Lara Jean. Crazy Rich Asians did the same thing with only one slight difference. The mysterious stranger, played by Glee's Harry Shum Jr., is the love interest of the leading man's married cousin, Astrid. In addition to following Astrid's potential juicy, scandalous love affair in China Rich Girlfriend, the novel also follows protagonists Nick and Rachel to China to search for her father.
The main cast, including Nick Golding, Constance Wu and Rachel Yeoh, have options in place for the sequels, as well, so we're likely to see them all return for China Rich Girlfriend. Many cast members have also spoken about their hope to see the franchise continue. “I hope there’s something in the future,” Golding told The Hollywood Reporter. “It would be so much fun to get everybody back together, back to sweaty old Singapore.”
Let's make it happen, people! We need more Crazy Rich Asians ASAP!
