President Donald Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, has been sentenced to three years in jail for tax and campaign finance violations. He was also ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution, forfeit $500,000, and hit with a fine of $50,000.

Before sentencing, Judge William Pauley told Cohen that "each of these crimes is a serious offense against the United States."

Cohen apologized and said he takes full responsibility for his criminal acts, including those involving the President. Cohen told the judge that his blind loyalty to Trump "led him to darkness" and that he believed that it was his duty to cover up Trump's "dirty deeds."

Cohen pleaded guilty to tax fraud, banking fraud and violations of campaign finance laws for arranging hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal before the 2016 presidential election.

Cohen also admitted to lying to Congress about plans to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.
