Twenty One Pilots Open Up About Getting Pre-Show Jitters

Twenty One Pilots are known for putting on a seriously good live show, and they've been doing it for years, but that doesn't mean Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun don't get pre-show jitters — especially at the beginning of a new tour — and the Bandito Tour is no different. While talking to Kerrang! the duo opened up about how it feels to play to crowds of thousands and embarking on a new tour.
"Any time you’re doing something new, you can’t rely on muscle memory," Joseph explained. "You have to be so present inside of your own body. It’s hard to explain, but when you’re performing in front of that many people, it’s so easy to extend yourself out, and be like, ‘Look at all them!’ and then you lose track of what you’re doing. You have to continue to collect yourself. But if you’re outwardly showing that you’re collecting yourself, it really affects your performance, so you have to find this perfect balance between being present in the moment, and being prepared. And it’s really hard to find that balance — and the first show back is the ultimate, ‘Here we go, let’s see if we can find that balance.’ Eventually you find it."
"I like the feeling [of nerves], ultimately, because it lets me know that we’re both still deeply passionate about what we do, and we enjoy it, and we want it to be right," Dun added. "Not feeling that is scary.”
TOP will be continuing their extensive tour in 2019, playing shows all over the world and looping back to North America over the summer. But before all that, they'll be gracing the stage at The Forum in Los Angeles along with Muse, The Killers, Weezer, Rise Against, Bishop Briggs, and The Revivalists on January 19 as part of iHeartRadio's 2019 edition of ALTer Ego.
