Missy Elliott is celebrating today and she certainly has good reason to. The Work It rapper has officially been inducted into the 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame but that's not the only feat. Missy is actually the first female rapper to be inducted, and the third hip-hop musician overall since the award began in 1969.
We have to give Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott her props. In addition to her solo hits like "Work It," "Get Ur Freak On," and "Lose Control," for over twenty years Missy has had a hand in shaping the careers of many of the music industry's heavy-hitters. The rapper has credits associated with artist Beyonce, Janet Jackson, No Doubt, Whitney Houston, *NSYNC, Fifth Harmony, Mary J. Blige and more.
For the award, Missy was up against other greats including Mariah Carey, Chrissie Hynde, Vince Gill, Mike Love, Jimmy Cliff, Jeff Lynne, Cat Stevens, John Prine, Lloyd Price, Tommy James, and the Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart), among others, the Associated Press reports.
Missy took to Twitter early this morning (1/12) to share her excitement for the induction.
“I want to CONGRATULATE all the AMAZING songwriters who have been inducted into the 2019 Song Writers Hall of Fame,” she tweeted. “Also those who were nominated because their body of work is AMAZING. I AM SO HUMBLY GRATEFUL to now be inducted also. I [love] you all.”

Six songwriters will be officially inducted to the Hall of Fame at the 50th annual Induction & Awards Gala in New York City on June 13, 2019.
Missy's music is timeless and many of us still sing the artist hits from the 90's and early 2000's! Missy herself has said that she is still performing Work It, a song released in 2002. Just last summer, a video went viral of a Rhode Island woman singing the hit song at a bbq.
The performance was such Internet gold, it even got Missy's attention, who tweeted at the time: "I just found out I have a FUNKY WHITE SISTER😳😩😂🤣 forreal doe😂🤣& she brought her home girl with her from da hood that keep tip toeing in the background with a plate of food🤣 yo I’m done!😂 but she straight killed “Work It” sound effects & all🙌🏾 I love it🔥🙌🏾."
