Slash Reveals Grossest Thing He's Ever Got In His Hair

Slash is one of the most iconic guitarists in the history of rock and roll for two reasons: being part of one of the most successful hard rock bands of all-time and his unique look.

The irony is that Slash grew out his long, curly locks and donned his signature top hat and aviator sunglasses to obscure his face when he first began playing in bands. However, the accoutrements helped make him one of the most recognizable figures in music.

But looking good isn't always glamorous. When asked during a Metal Hammer fan Q&A about the downside of his famous hairdo, Slash didn't hesitate with his answer: spit, a lot of spit.

"Guns N' Roses opened for Social Distortion back in 1985 at The Street Scene, which was this big street festival all through downtown Los Angeles," Slash recalled. "And we had a spitting contest with the people in the audience and all that spit [was] all in [my] hair."

A 'spitting contest' is a nice way of explaining that the gig wasn't going well.

"It was a punk thing," Slash added. "We were the kind of rock 'n' roll band that had a punk influence but to a punk audience we were still a rock 'n' roll band, so if they decide to spit on us we're going to spit on them, and it lasted for the whole show."

The '80s sure were a crazy time.

Slash is on tour with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators through August. Get all their tour dates here.

And please, no spitting.
