Frank Iero Explains My Chemical Romance Nod In Single ‘Young And Doomed’

Frank Iero is back with his new band, Frank Iero And The Future Violents, and the group recently released its first single, "Young and Doomed."

For those who listen to the song carefully (or are just massive My Chemical Romance fans), you may have noticed that the former MCR member dropped a reference to his old band in the lyrics.

In the second verse, Iero sings, "Cause kids are so unkind/To kids of different kinds/And I promise that I'm not okay/(Oh, wait, that's the other guy)" — a reference to the iconic My Chemical Romance track "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)."

In a recent interview with Hysteria Magazine, Iero explained his decision to include the nod on his band's song. “I don’t know if I was purposely trying to stir sh*t? It was more that I liked the idea of breaking down this fourth wall," He revealed. "To me, it was very much like reading a comic and you find out that two superheroes are in the same universe even though they don’t necessarily interact. I like the fact that it called back to previous works. I feel a song like 'Young and Doomed' is very tied to a song like 'I’m Not Okay' and it’s also really tied to a song like 'I’m a Mess.' So that line, it just fits so perfectly."

He further explained that he knew the lyrics would bring attention to the song once it was released. "I knew that it was going to cause some disruption for others but what I was hoping for was that attention would be brought to what I was actually trying to say within the song," he said.

The new Frank Iero And The Future Violents album Barriers is set for release this Friday (May 31). Listen for the MCR reference in "Young and Doomed" below!
