The next stop on Kanye West's Sunday Service pop-up tour was none other than Howard University.
The 42-year-old rapper stopped at the historically black university in honor of their homecoming for a surprise performance with his Sunday Service band and choir. While the show was announced overnight, tickets had sold out by 8 a.m on Saturday (October 12).
According to NBC Washington, Ye performed "new verses and [raised] his hands to the sky for the worship-style show," which was held on the school's quad in early hours of the morning. Ye additionally performed a number of his hits, including "Jesus Walks," "Fade," "Beautiful Morning," and more.
Mr. West was also joined by his wife Kim Kardashian and his two oldest children, North and Saint.
Last Saturday (October 5), Kanye's Sunday Service in Salt Lake City, Utah turned political as he discussed his right to support Donald Trump and the republican party. βAbraham Lincoln was the Whig Party β thatβs the Republican Party that freed the slaves,β Kanye told the crowd as his band backed him playing "Jesus Walks." "And we got the right, right? We got a right to our opinions, right? You black, so you can't like Trump? I ain't never made a decision only based on my color."
And if that wasn't enough, he also revisited his controversial comment about slavery being a choice, adding, "That's a form of slavery βmental slavery."
As fans know, Ye's previous comments about slavery landed him in hot water. "When you hear about slavery for 400 years ... for 400 years? That sounds like a choice," he insisted during a live 2018 TMZ interview. βLike, you was there for 400 years and it's all of y'all? It's like we're mentally in prison." (He later apologized.)
Ye continued his Utah Sunday Service message by discussing another form of "mental slavery" β social media. βDo not read comments on the Internet. These people donβt know you like that. Social media is designed to make you think slower. β¦ They want to slow you down and control you," he proclaimed.
