The evening began with footage of one of Baker's legendary drum solos projected onto a screen, followed by Clatpon, Waters and the house band taking the stage for a rendition of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love."
Before the band began to play, Clapton remarked that he finds it hard to believe that parts of video package were filmed 50 years ago.
"I used to call him [his given name] Peter Edward — I still would call him Peter Edward, and I think he's here, somewhere," Clapton remarked. "We're going to be playing music for you tonight, and we're going to help him along. He was a scoundrel, but I loved him and he loved me, and that was that."
Clapton added that he's "blessed" that he was never the subject of one of Baker's notorious outbursts.
Baker's death in October at age 80, drew tributes from throughout the rock world, particularly from other British musicians, who emphasized Baker's influence on generations of rock drummers.
