There's a lot going on in the world right now which means folks are a bit more stressed than usual. Some are able to cope with it but the troubling times are causing a lot of people to lose sleep. If you're among the many worriers too wired to fall asleep, there's a breathing technique that can help. Insomniacs swear by it, with some promising it'll have you catching z's in under a minute.
It's called the 4-7-8 Method and comes from celebrity doctor Andrew Weil, who called it the "single best method that I've found for dealing with getting back to sleep if you wake up in the middle of the night." He added that it comes from Indian yogis who use it during meditation.
So how's it work? All you do is inhale through your nose for four seconds, hold that breath for seven seconds, and slowly exhale it out for eight seconds. Keep doing that and before long you'll be asleep.
Weil explained how it works, saying, "It helps to calm over-stressed minds, managing anxiety and controlling anger responses, by forcing your heartbeat to slow down. The theory is that by imposing certain rhythms on the breath with your voluntary system, gradually these are induced into the involuntary nervous system. And that comes with time. So it’s the regularity of doing this over a period of weeks, months, years that produces the changes that you want."
He stated that by doing the breathing technique twice a day, you'll quickly see the benefits.
Pleasant dreams!
