When it comes to writing songs for Thomas Rhett, his three young daughters are always at the top of his mind. The country star recently opened up about how important it is for him to be an artist that people feel comfortable listening to and watching in concert as a family.
"All these guys can tell you, when I'm writin' a song and there's a line that doesn't fully represent my ethics or my morals, then it ain't gonna be in the song," Rhett tells his record label, referencing several of his frequent co-writers sitting with him.
His co-writers confirmed, adding that Rhett's refusal to include certain words or phrases in his songs has actually led to several arguments. The country star explains that his refusal to compromise is because he has his children in the back of his mind. "I just want to make sure that when my kids do hear my songs there's nothing that they can go to school and say, 'Well my dad said do that.' You know what I'm saying? Like that would destroy me, I think."
Currently, his daughters Willa Gray, Ada James, and Lennon Love are too young to understand how popular their dad is. However, when the time comes and the girls understand, it's safe to say Rhett won't have any regrets or problem letting them hear his music. He jokes, "I hope that our kids think we're remotely cool when they're 25 years old. Most kids don't."
While quarantine at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rhett has been sharing new music with fans. Of course, some of the songs reference his wife and children such as "Ya Heard." Others like "What's Your Country Song?" asks listeners to reflect on what songs have shaped them throughout their life.
Additionally, last month, Rhett released an uplifting new song, "Be A Light" featuring Keith Urban, Reba McEntire, Hillary Scott and Chris Tomlin. The song, written by Rhett alongside Josh Miller, Josh Thompson and Matt Dragstrem, offers a message of hope and encouragement in these difficult times.
Proceeds from "Be A Light" sales go to benefit the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. This fund goes towards members of the music industry who are currently suffering from the coronavirus and those out of work due to the pandemic.
