The Host Can See Private Messages On Zoom And It's Left A Student Mortified

Now that just about everyone is working from home or schooling from home, the use of video conferencing has skyrocketed. Plenty of people have turned to Zoom to conduct their classes or meetings because it's an easy-to-use platform that even offers features like virtual backgrounds and private chats. However, it turns out that the chats you might be having aren't always private, and it's left one girl mortified.

Her name is Faith and she shared her humiliating tale on TikTok and Twitter, writing, "I didn't know my professor could view my 'private' convos on Zoom," and sharing a video of her self laughing. Behind her is an email she got from her teacher. It reads,

"Dear Faith, I am reaching out to inform you that I can see everything you write in the chat discussion. My class session is not the appropriate time to be sending messages like 'I'm a bougie a**, rachet a**, freak b***h...' It's very disruptive to the class and I do NOT condone this kind of behavior during my lectures. I strongly advise you to keep the inappropriate comments to yourself from now on or else it will jeopardize your final grade for this course."

Faith went on to suggest that others who have been having off-topic conversations in their Zoom chats "might as well send your sorry email" now before they get confronted by the host of their meeting. She also explained that she has since apologized to her teacher too.

It should be noted though that on their help page, Zoom specifically states, "Note: Private messages between participants are not viewable by the host." If that is the case, there's no word on how the professor saw the chat.
