Hulu Hasn’t Discussed Taking On 'Lizzie McGuire' Reboot With Hilary Duff

Fans of Lizzie McGuire have been on quite the roller coaster since news of a Disney Plus revival series was announced last year. While Hilary Duff and the shows original viewers were excited to see a grown up version of the beloved character back on the small screen, the powers that be at Disney had a more family-friendly version of the show in mind. After clashing over their creative differences, production of the revival series was put on hold.

Back in February 2020, Duff addressed the situations with her followers and called for Disney to produce the show for Hulu instead of the younger-skewing Disney Plus. “Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains!” Duff wrote on Instagram. “However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with LIZZIE who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating.”

“It’s important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable,” she continued. “It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again.”

A new report from Vanity Fair holds a disappointing update on the Lizzie McGuire revival for fans. According to Hulu’s head of original content, Craig Erwich, there have been no discussions with Disney and Duff to move Lizzie McGuire to Hulu. Crushing all our dreams, Erwich said, “I appreciate her fandom. We have not had any conversations with Hilary Duff around her show," he told Vanity Fair.

Though there haven't been discussions about moving Lizzie McGuire to Hulu, the move would not be unprecedented. Disney has already moved two shows originally slated to launch on Disney Plus—Love, Victor and High Fidelity—to Hulu because of content concerns. Both shows are available to stream on Hulu now.

While this isn't the update fans were hoping for, as recently as April Duff was still passionate about making the revival happen. She told People: “I just have to make sure it’s the right move for me and that I feel like I’m honoring her and the character and that it will be relatable to the people who grew up with her because those are the people I really want to speak to.”
