Florida Governor Ron DeSantis gave Miami-Dade County the green light to move into Phase 2 of reopening, according to NBC Miami on Friday (September 11).

The governor made this announcement at the Frost Museum of Science alongside Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

In-person instruction will be allowed to resume at Miami-Dade schools, Gov. DeSantis said. Officials added that parents can decide whether their children continues with remote learning or not.

"This is really, really important. We've had a very difficult six months but it's been very difficult for kids," DeSantis said. "Many of them did a good job under the circumstances but it's just not the same."

Students and teachers have participated in remote learning since March. This was to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

"DeSantis said downward trends in COVID-19 positivity rates and virus-related hospitalizations have made it possible for the counties to move to Phase 2," NBC Miami reported.

Officials have not decided on a reopening date, according to Carvalho.

"We are extremely encouraged by the downward trends that we have observed," the superintendant said.

The school district has been marred by issues at the beginning of the school year, from multiple cyberattacks in its first week to the severed ties with a virtual school program.

Earlier this week, Gimenez said outdoor attractions and similar businesses will be allowed to reopen on Monday, September 14, including parks, tour boats, bike rental shops and zoos. The curfew was also reduced, starting at 11 p.m. instead of 10 p.m.

Florida bars can reopen next week, as well, but Gimenez affirmed that Miami-Dade bars will remain closed until further notice.
