U.S. Coast Guard and Customs officials made quite a discovery on a ship heading up the Miami River, according to NBC Miami on Wednesday (September 16).
The vessel, La Temperance, was boarded on Monday (September 14) after it was suspected of "fraudulent marine credentials" at a previous stop, the agency said.
K-9 units were brought onboard and sniffed out 20 packages of cocaine, which totaled 33 pounds, according to the Coast Guard.
"Coast Guard officials say law enforcement actions are still pending," the website said.
Earlier this year, authorities also caught a coastal freighter on the Miami River carrying $400,000 worth of cocaine, NBC Miami reported on April 4.
Officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said that they seized 42 pounds of cocaine from the vessel on February 28.
According to authorities, the drugs were hidden behind the interior walls of one of the vessel's cabins.
"CBP officers made the discovery when they used a power tool to drill into a wall, and found a white powdery substance on the tip of the drill," according to NBC Miami.
Officials said the coastal freighter, M/V Carib Trader II, also traveled from "Gonaives, Haiti, and stopped in Bimini, Bahamas before stopping in the Miami River."
