Thomas Rhett Reflects On ACM Awards Win: 'Most Surreal Moment Of My Life'

Thomas Rhett was crowned Entertainer of the Year alongside Carrie Underwood at the ACM Awards last Wednesday, (September 16), marking the first-ever tie in the show's history. Following the win, Rhett appeared on the Today show where he reflected on the big night.

"It's just amazing that that even happened," he shared. "It was the most surreal moment of my life."

The country singer went on to explain how the Entertainer of the Year award is one that he has "been dreaming about since I began."

"Me and my band have put so much work into the show, trying to make it as good as it can possibly be," he added. "Last night, it came and went so fast. I think I'll need a week to process it, to be honest with you."

Still can’t believe last night was real 🙌🏼 Would like to spend some time thanking every single person that has had a hand in my journey. From my family- Lauren, Willa, Ada and Lennon this is all for you every single day. My friends that have been there since college- my dad, Rhett Akins, who has been my biggest cheerleader and favorite co-writer since I was old enough to hold a guitar - to my Mom and Stepdad, whose love and unwavering support has made this dream possible - to my publisher, Ben Vaughn, who believed in me first - to Allison Jones and Scott Borchetta for taking a chance on a 19 year old kid in the Big Machine Records conference room. Virginia, Harry, Nichole, and the whole G Major team- Brian O’Connell and everyone at Live Nation and Joey Lee and everyone at WME and everyone at BMI. Duane Clark and FBMM. George Briner and the entire Valory Music Co team. Jesse, Dann and every single creative who has brought life and love to my music. Tyne and GreenRoom PR Team. Everyone at Country Radio who has ever supported me and played my music. AND My incredible band and crew - and every single band and crew out there struggling to make ends meet right now - my heart is with you and your families. This can not and never will be done alone. What a great privilege it is to share this with so many people that I love. Thank you again to the ACMs and to all of you 💛 #acmawards

Rhett's wife, Lauren Akins, joined the interview to share how proud she was over her husband's historic win.

"I think we're both still processing," she said. "Just watching years and years of him put so much work and energy and love toward country music, and the people who come to the shows and all the people who work with him and what they've done to make this happen, it feels like finally after all these years it's his dream come true, like the ultimate dream come true."

She added, "And it's just so cool to watch. Just so proud of him and everybody."

Following his win, Rhett also turned to Instagram to reflect and share a video with fans from the last show of his "Very Hot Summer Tour" in 2019.

"If you would have told me on this night last year - The final night of my 2019 tour - that I wouldn’t be playing another show again for the forseeable future- that our 2020 tour would not be happening- that every single thing we planned would be rescheduled or canceled- that our year would be spent at home, with our families- behind masks and for some of us battling a virus none of us had heard of- I don’t think I would’ve believed you," he wrote. "If you had then told me I’d be named 2020 ACM Entertainer of the Year, I would have believed you even less."

"I am so honored to share this award with someone as unbelievable as @carrieunderwood 🙏🏼," he continued. "There is not enough space here on Instagram to properly thank all the people who have helped me along this journey and tell them how I feel about them. More on that to follow. For now, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to the @acmawards and all of you for this incredible honor 💛"
