Next week, 35 of the biggest names in music are joining forces to help ensure the survival of independent music venues. On Thursday (October 8) the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), in partnership with YouTube Music, announced the Save Our Stages Festival aka #SOSFest.
The three-day virtual event will benefit NIVA's Emergency Relief Fund and feature Foo Fighters playing an intimate set from Los Angeles' iconic Troubadour.
"The smaller music venues and the ones that are really struggling are not only culturally important, they are emotionally important,” Dave Grohl said in a statement.
“During this shutdown, all the uncertainties we have and are experiencing have been very unnerving and have caused a high level of despair,” added Troubadour owner Christine Karayan. “That is why we are so happy and beyond grateful to all the fans and music community for banding together to help and to show their support and love to all the independent venues across the country. This is our light and hope in our time of darkness.”
The Foos are just one of 35 bands participating in the benefit festival, which will be streaming live from 25 independent music venues across America. Dave Matthews, FINNEAS, Portugal. The Man, The Lumineers, Rise Against, The Revivalists, Phoebe Bridgers, Brittany Howard, and more are also set to perform.
#SOSFest is broadcasting live October 16-18 on NIVA's YouTube channel. Though the livestream is free, viewers are encouraged to donate money to the Emergency Relief Fund, which was created to help independent music venues survive the COVID-19 pandemic.
