An active hurricane season has continuously rocked residents along the Gulf Coast, and many people have lost everything from the storms. Now one group is doing what they can to help.
Started by Baton Rouge residents Brad Parker and Blake Vincent, the Louisiana Saturday Night Foundation aims to provide campers for uninsured families impacted by hurricanes, providing shelter as they "begin the process of rebuilding and resuming life," according to the group's website.
"People lose their homes in so many different ways that this sort of business model sort of lends itself to beyond hurricanes," Parker told KPLC. "So I think that's the long term idea that we both have for this. It just makes sense for us since we live in Louisiana and have ties to Lake Charles and know what it's like to deal with hurricane destruction. That's kind of where we see it going."
The campers wouldn't be limited to just Louisiana residents but would be available to anyone impacted by major storms in surrounding states.
"Hurricane season comes around every year. So this is something that can be based in Louisiana and is essential to the gulf coast," said Vincent. "We would store them somewhere in Louisiana, high and dry. But then if Texas needs us next year or Mississippi, Alabama, or Florida we could have campers ready to go."
The organization is now accepting applications for those in the Lake Charles area who have been impacted by Hurricanes Laura and Delta. According to KPLC, the number of campers they can provide for free is tied to the amount they rent to paying customers. More information about the group and applications can be found here.
