Democratic candidate Joe Biden has won Michigan in a close race, sources reported Wednesday afternoon (November 4).

CNN and NBC were among the first sources to project Biden’s win in Michigan, where Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and election officials have urged patience from the public as ballot counting was underway.

That earns Biden 16 electoral votes from one of the crucial battleground states.

The Associated Press, which also called Biden winning Michigan on Wednesday afternoon, shows the former Vice President with 264 electoral votes, versus President Donald Trump’s 214 votes. A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win.

On Wednesday, the AP explained why the presidential race was still too close to call, noting that the news organization “is not calling the presidential race yet because neither candidate has secured the 270 electoral college votes needed for victory.”

It included an alphabetical breakdown of the call it’s made for each state so far.

Earlier in the day Wednesday, Biden officially garnered more votes than any other candidates in history.

“Proud of all the election workers who are meticulously, securely, transparently, tirelessly continuing to #CountEveryVote in Michigan,” Benson tweeted Wednesday afternoon. “And let me abundantly clear: we are not going to let any campaign, candidate, or political party stop our work to ensure every voice is heard.”
