Law enforcement officials had to usher a group of Republicans challengers away from the voting area at the TCF Center in Detroit after election officials told the Republicans the room was at capacity and they couldn’t re-enter it.
It happened Wednesday afternoon, around the time after multiple sources reported that Democratic candidate Joe Biden won Michigan over President Donald Trump.
In the “chaotic scene,” law enforcement officials attempted to move the group of challenges away from the ballot counting area. The challengers pounded on windows and doors as they stormed the ballot counting area and yelled to be let in and to stop counting, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Although some believed they were barred from the area because of their party affiliation, the Free Press also noted that both Republicans and Democrats were kept outside the ballot counting area, the challengers of both of the parties pointed out.
Only six tables of ballot counters remained at the TCF Center as of about 4 p.m. Wednesday.
“Proud of all the election workers who are meticulously, securely, transparently, tirelessly continuing to #CountEveryVote in Michigan,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson tweeted Wednesday afternoon. “And let me abundantly clear: we are not going to let any campaign, candidate, or political party stop our work to ensure every voice is heard.”
