In Country Grammar, named for the rapper’s debut studio album that released in 2000, Nelly reflects on the album that launched his career.

“The best time of your life is the come-up because everything is new and you appreciate it. You ain’t got nothing to lose,” Nelly said in the video teasing the documentary release, posted to Facebook on Tuesday (November 24). “Once you’re successful, now you have something to lose. Now the thinking starts, now the planning starts. Back then, there wasn’t no planning. You go with it. You ride the wave.”

Before skyrocketing to success, Nelly — Cornell Haynes Jr. — grew up in University City and lives in St. Louis County. He graduated from University City High School in 1993, according to the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, which also notes his passion for family and sports.

“Always proud to don St. Louis team jerseys and colors, Nelly is a stellar athlete who was scouted by the baseball Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates,” according to the commission. “His pro ball focus shifted to music when he and his group, the St. Lunatics, had their first regional hit. Scoring big on the music charts didn’t keep him from smashing a baseball. Nelly went yard wearing a National League jersey and Cardinals cap during the 2014 Major League Baseball Legends and Celebrity Softball event. Head to Pin-Up Bowl in The Loop to see where the rapper has rolled more than one perfect game.”

The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission also noted Nelly’s successful genre crossovers, including in country music.

Though it wasn’t immediately clear when fans could watch the Country Grammar documentary, Nelly says it’s “coming soon.”
