Police are searching for a Colorado Springs man who attempted to light a ballot drop box on fire earlier this fall.

Authorities are turning to the public for help with identifying the individual.

The crime took place on October 29 on South Cascade Avenue, according to CBS4.

The identity of the man remains unknown to law enforcement.

According to police, the suspect lit up a rolled piece of paper and put slid it into an official ballot drop box.

Luckily the flame died out quickly and was not able to damage any of the ballots inside.

"This is the only incident of its kind that we are aware of in the City of Colorado Springs limits," said the Colorado Springs Police Department on Friday, December 4.

Tampering with voting systems, devices, or equipment used to cast and count votes is a misdemeanor in the state of Colorado, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

The crime can clearly be seen on surveillance photos, but a black face mask and backward cap cover the suspect's face and hair.

Anyone with more information or anyone capable of identifying the suspect is asked to call CSPD at (719) 444-7000.
