Gloria Estefan said she contracted COVID-19 after interacting with a maskless fan, according to the Hollywood Reporter. She's also urging people to maintain social distancing and wear masks during a "very big spike in Miami [Florida]."
The Grammy-winning singer took to Instagram Wednesday (December 2) to explain the situation. Despite "rigorously" following public health guidelines and rarely leaving her home, Estefan said she tested positive for the novel coronavirus and spent two weeks in isolation. She always wears a mask when she does leave her home, the "Conga" singer added.
At the end of October, Estefan said she and her family dined outside a local restaurant. She stressed that they all wore masks "all the way to the table." After six days, the singer noticed a lack of taste or smell. Three days later, she tested positive.
Estefan also brought up a brief interaction with an unmasked fan. She said the individual tapped her shoulder and was "fairly close" when they were speaking.
"I even held my breath through their talk, but something must have happened there,” Estefan said. The "Anything For You" singer quarantined herself on the second floor of her home in November. She attributed her minimal symptoms to vitamins and a strong immune system.
“Fear was my biggest problem,” she said. “We’ve got to grab fear and shake it and just do whatever you can to keep your immune system as healthy as you can.”
