Dozens of sugar gliders are reportedly up for adoption in Boston.

A total of 27 male and 17 female sugar gliders were surrendered to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after their previous owner was overwhelmed by the growing number of pets after they began to reproduce, MSPCA confirmed to WHDH.

Sugar gliders are tiny marsupials who get their name from their preference of sugary foods such as sap and nectar and ability to glide through the air, similar to a flying squirrel. The 44 sugar gliders at MSPCA range from ages 1 to 13 and were described by the facility as being friendly, social and healthy, WHDH reports.

MSPCA-Angell director of adoption centers and programs Mike Keiley said the adoptable sugar gliders would make excellent pets for anyone with previous experiencing taking care of small mammals.

“Sugar gliders are extremely social animals and can make great pets—but they are exotic animals and need specialized care,” Keiley said.

MSPCA is holding back some of the female sugar gliders at the facility who are currently pregnant until they give birth.

Anyone interested in adopting the sugar gliders can contact MSPCA via email at adoption@mspca.org or metheun@mspca.org with inquiries.
