County workers discovered a human skeleton in a Sacramento County storm drain Tuesday (December 8) morning.

Investigators are now working to identify the person and how they died.

Sacramento County crews were working out on Gorden Drive and Stockton Boulevard when they noticed a shoe with human bones inside while clearing out storm drains in the area.

According to CBS13, crews used a vacuum truck to collect debris from the drain and discovered the foot while unloading the debris onto the hopper.

The crew called the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and the coroner out to the scene.

Once authorities arrived, they recovered 90% of a human skeleton in the storm drain according to the sheriff's office.

ABC10 reported that the drain itself is also connected to a vacant lot.

The Sacramento County Coroner's Office is now working to determine the cause of death and the identity of the remains.

The sheriff's office is maintaining the site where the remains were found in the meantime.

Authorities are not clear on how long the body could have been down in the drains. According to the sheriff's office, the last time the Sacramento County drains were cleared was in 2014.
