The Oregon Humane Society in Portland took 250 guinea pigs from an overwhelmed pet owner, according to the Associated Press.

Nobody knows how a Lane County woman ended up with hundreds of these little rodents, but they are being kept at the Humane Society's Cat and Kitten Intake Center in the mean time. Reporters said the shelter has been closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it can accommodate the guinea pigs for care and treatment.

According to OHS Spokeswoman Laura Klink, they've been working on an adoption timeline over several days. “We certainly would love to see some of these guys go home in pairs, whether it’s two males or females. But obviously, we’re going to be giving a lot of counseling on how quickly they can reproduce if you’ve got a male and a female together,” she said.

KOMO said there will be a special adoption process. Animal specialists will work with potential adopters to make sure the guinea pigs find a fitting home.

Back in October, Washington authorities rescued dozens of dogs and puppies from a home. Come a month later, the Humane Society in that area have the animals ready for adoption.
