Two conjoined twin babies were successfully separated at UC David Children's Hospital and sent home just in time for Christmas.

In a press release, UC Davis Health announced the formerly conjoined Abigail and Micaela Bachinskiy were discharged from the children's hospital on December 23 to spend their first Christmas together at home.

"They are healthy and happy and their futures are bright," said pediatric neurosurgeon Micheal Edwards in a statement. "so many people in our hospital, at all levels, have been touched by these girls and their story."

The 11-month-old twins were born connected at the head. A 24-hour separation surgery occurred from October 24-25. They spent almost two months recovering at the children's hospital.

The two girls' parents have dubbed them "miracles."

"We've been praying for this day and praise God, it's here," said Liliya Bachinskiy.

Many hospital staff members have been involved in the twin's care for almost a year. Saying goodbye to the girls, now nicknamed Abby and Mica, was bittersweet.

"It's been an emotional roller coaster," said clinical nurse specialist Dawn Harbour. "It's just miraculous that they're separated. We're just in awe and so thankful that we got to be part of a miracle here at UC Davis."
