CHVRCHES Explain How Time Apart Shaped Their Upcoming New Album

CHVRCHES are currently working on their fourth studio album, the follow-up to 2018's Love Is Dead.

Like most bands, 2020 afforded CHVRCHES the unprecedented luxury of time — and lots of it — to write, record, and perfect their highly-anticipated fourth album. Since they weren't traversing the globe on tour in support of Halsey, they turned to focus on writing new music.

In a new interview with The Guardian, lead singer Lauren Mayberry opened up about how writing and recording away from her bandmates unfolded in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The theme of it didn’t necessarily change, but it evolved because of the circumstances of 2020,” she said. “It’s been an interesting time to sit with your thoughts, your hopes, your dreams, your self-loathing… I think you just have to become comfortable with the discomfort. That’s been a learning curve over the course of the year, and over the course of making the album.”

In addition to that, the singer also confessed the band had "eight years of band baggage that needed to be unpacked and fixed” and the pandemic allowed them to work separately from one another for the first time and resulted in everyone needing to dust off their communication skills with one another.

“You have to be communicating at the highest level of efficiency and openness. That was long overdue,” she said. “It was actually quite helpful to sit in a room with no one else there and actually write down some of the stuff that you’re most terrified of.”

Mayberry also said that the band's music has evolved on this new album and for fans not to expect to hear the exact same type of sound from the previous three albums.
