Sacramento County To Discuss Reopening Sooner At In-Person Conference

Sacramento County leaders are currently planning a three-day policy conference to discuss the possibility of reopening sooner, according to CBS13.

On January 4, it was announced that Sacramento would be extending its regional stay-at-home order which was scheduled to expire that day. The extension was caused by four-week projections showing the ICU capacity in the area decreasing after the holidays.

Four out of five California regions are currently well below the 15% ICU capacity needed for a region to be released from the state-mandated stay-at-home order.

The Greater Sacramento region is currently at 9.2% ICU capacity. The San Joaquin Valley and Southern California regions both remain at 0%.

Despite these disappointing statistics, many say the state's economy cannot survive these indefinite stay-at-home orders.

That's why Sacramento County leaders are hosting the "Re-Open Cal Now" conference in Rancho Murieta along with medical experts and economists.

"We have a responsibility to do everything we can to research, to understand COVID and the lockdown and advocate for those we represent," Sacramento County Supervisor Sue Frost told CBS13.

While the county was cleared by environmental management and ABC to safely hold the event, county health officials have voiced their concerns that it's in violation of state and local health orders.

The event is scheduled in a 44,000-square-foot outdoor arena with sanitizing protocols enforced. Masks will also be provided to attendees.

Local business owners are hopeful that the event will lead to a quick reopening.
