In a news conference on Monday, January 11, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that Sacramento's Cal Expo has been selected to serve as a large-scale vaccination site.

Other vaccination sites around California include the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres stadiums, according to KCRA3. They are scheduled to open as early as this week.

Governor Newsom says more large-scale vaccination sites are planned as the state works to get more people vaccinated.

Since the vaccine became available to the public, the state has struggled to keep up with the distribution.

California has been shipped nearly 2.5 million vaccine doses according to Newsom. Around 784,000 shots have been administered as of last weekend.

"As it relates to vaccinations … we recognize that the current strategy is not going to get us to where we need to go as quickly as we all need to go," Newsom said. "And so that’s why we’re speeding up the administration, not just for priority groups but also now opening up large sites to do so — meaning Dodgers Stadium, Padres Stadium, Cal Expo."

Newsom also announced that over the last 14 days, California has seen a 6% increase in COVID-related hospitalizations, which is a smaller rate of increase compared to previous weeks.
