A five year study by Car Insurance Comparison shows that Utah is one of the top 15 states with the most vehicle thefts.

The study shows that 3,683,769 vehicles were stolen in the United States between 2014 and 2018. Utah alone accounted for 42,650 of the thefts and came in at number eight on the list. Utah averaged 373 stolen vehicles per 100,000 registered vehicles during this time frame.

Though the average number of thefts in Utah was high, there is a bright side. The number of vehicle thefts in Utah increased by just six percent between 2014 and 2018, which is three percent less than the nationwide average.

Here are the top 15 worst states for vehicle theft according to Car Insurance Comparison:

  1. Washington, D.C.
  2. California
  3. New Mexico
  4. Nevada
  5. Washington
  6. Hawaii

  8. Utah
  9. Colorado
  10. Oregon
  11. Oklahoma
  12. Missouri

To determine the list, Car Insurance Comparison used two primary sources of data: the National Insurance Crime Bureau's number of thefts per state and the Federal Highway Administration's number of registered vehicles per state.
