Police in North Carolina are searching for a man they said played dead on the side of the road in order to rob whoever helped him. One such Good Samaritan received a stab wound to the leg on Monday night (January 11) when he tried to assist the man lying near the Exit 47 ramp on Interstate 40 in Asheville.

"The victim was stopped in their vehicle on the exit ramp when they saw a person not moving on the side of the road," the department said in a news release. "The victim rolled down their vehicle window to see if the person needed help, and they did not respond."

Officials said the victim, whose name has not been released, got out of their car to see if they could help the supposedly unresponsive man. Instead, they received quite a shock.

"When he got close, the suspect demanded his wallet, and when he refused stabbed him in the leg and ran toward the wooded area," police said. The victim was able to drive himself to a local veterans hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police continue to search for the suspect, who is described as a 6-foot white male, approximately 180 pounds, with a beard and shoulder-length light brown hair. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Asheville Police Department at 828-252-1110. Anonymous tips can be left by texting "TIP2APD" to 847411 or by downloading the TIP2APD app.
