Two people escaped their burning Phoenix home early on Wednesday morning by jumping from their second-story balcony.
Both victims, a man and a woman, are in the hospital.
A fire broke out just before 5 a.m. at Desert Meadows Apartments near 43rd Avenue and Bell Road.
Capt. Todd Keller of the Phoenix Fire Department told AZ Family that crews were first notified that someone was trapped on the second floor.
He said, "As firefighters got on scene, they found that that victim had jumped off the second-floor balcony."
The man has not yet been identified, but is noted to be "in extremely critical condition," according to Keller. The woman was said to be in stable condition when she was taken to the hospital. Both victims were taken to a burn unit.
The apartment where the fire started as well as the one below it were damaged.
Keller said, "There will be extensive salvage and overhaul on both of the units involved."
The firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other units in the building.
According to Keller, three people were displaced in the fire.
