A mysterious couple of baked potatoes found outside a local Massachusetts library was mentioned on national television.

During his 'Quantine-while' segment on 'the Late Show' Tuesday (January 19) night, host Stephen Colbert referenced the unexplained potatoes appearing on the lawn of the Wayland Free Public Library last week.

Last Friday (January 15), the Wayland Free Public Library announced in a Facebook post that a first potato appeared on Monday (January 11) and then a second on Thursday (January 14.)

“This is the kind of news I hope to spend more time thinking about in 2021,” Colbert said before introducing the story, which has been shared by numerous major outlets.

"If it were just one, the mainstream media would completely ignore it," Colbert jokingly added, "But two potatoes — that's a clear pattern of pota-terrorism."

The library is asking for public assistance in solving the mystery, which the library joked may have been "part of a rare potato mitigation" or possibly thrown away after a "kid on a bus revolted by a packed lunch."

Several commenters also chimed in with jokes, including one Facebook user who said "It's just napping before taking its daily stroll on the walking trail."

Another commenter joked the potato was part of "a game of hot potato gone awry."
